In 2024, Kazakhstan recorded 28,147 cases of measles in children — the fourth highest rate in the world relative to population size.
Measles is one of the most contagious viral diseases. One in five patients experiences severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and meningitis, and it can also lead to blindness and deafness. The measles virus can destroy up to 70% of previously acquired immunity, significantly increasing the risk of complications even from common infections. Long-term consequences are also possible, including the life-threatening condition panencephalitis. Every year, measles claims the lives of over 100,000 children worldwide. The only effective way to protect against this disease is vaccination.
